Crochet Big Blocks Modern Granny Afghan
This the Crochet Big Blocks Modern Granny Afghan. I love the Modern Granny stitch. It works up so quickly and mindlessly, that I just had to create another blanket with it. I used the new Caron Big Cakes yarn for this one. It's a generous 54" x 68" with only 5 Cakes. Of course, you can substitute any worsted weight yarn in your favorite colors to create your own blanket. I hope you enjoy the Big Blocks in this design.
Crochet Big Blocks Modern Granny Afghan
- 5 Caron Big Cakes
- Crochet Hook 5.0mm Size H
Each block is ~11 ½" square before joining. Blanket consists of 20 squares before adding the border rounds. One Cake made 5 squares and I used a whole Cake for the border.
Finished Size - 54" x 68"
First Square - Ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 - Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and thoughtout), 2 dc in ring, ch 1, [3 dc in ring, ch 1] 3 times; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Round 2 - Sl st in next 2 dc, [(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-1 sp (corner made), ch 3] 4 times; join with sl st in first sc.
Round 3 - (Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, [(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp] 3 times; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Round 4 - Sl st in next 2 dc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, [sc in next sp between 3-dc groups, ch 3] to next corner ch-1 sp; rep from * 3 more times; join with sl st to first sc.
Round 5 - (Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in first corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each ch-3 sp to corner, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp, 3 dc in each sp to corner; rep from * 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rounds 6 thru 13 - Rep rounds 4 and 5.
Round 14 - Rep round 4. Finish off.
All Remaining Squares - Repeat rounds 1 thru 13.
Round 14 - Join-As-You-Go - Sl st in next 2 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch-1 sp, ch 3, [sc in next sp between 3-dc groups, ch 3] to next corner ch-1 sp, [sc, ch 1, sc to corner of first square, ch 1 sc, in corner ch-1 sp] (first join created), *ch 1, sc to next ch-3 sp of first square, ch 1, sc in next sp between next 3-dc group; *repeat to next corner and join the corner the same as the first corner. Continue the rest of the square as in round 14 and finish off.
I connect 5 squares into one strip, then go back and add the following squares to the first row.
Border
Round 1 thru 7, continue in pattern around edge of blanket rep rounds 4 and 5 of square.
Round 8 - Sl st in next 2 dc, *(sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-1 sp (corner made), [ch 1, sk dc, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk dc, sc in sp between 3-dc groups] to next corner ch-1 sp; rep from * 3 more times, join with sl st to first sc. Finish off.

This is similar in design. For the Big Block you just go for more rounds before joining.

It is fabulous! I love this pattern, and welcome the diversity as most patterns out there for Caron Big Cakes are the kinda sorta ripple and the modern granny blankets in one big square or rectangle. I've been going nuts trying to come up with an idea for a warmer blanket and decided on the dc moss stitch. It's working nicely!
The only question I have is when beginning the next block, did you just start from the point in the cake the previous square ended at, or did you pick out the colors and separate them... And make the squares by chosing the color order yourself?

I cannot Croche, my sister does and I trying to surprise her with all she needs to make an item in the family colors using beautiful yarn. But I have no idea how much yarn to buy.
